7 Signs You Need to Replace Your Siding

If your home exteriors have become damaged by the elements and you want to improve the look of your home, it could be time to replace your siding.

Many components must work together to protect your home and everything inside. With constant exposure to harsh elements, these parts of your home will need to be repaired or even replaced as time goes on. But how do you know when to replace the siding on your house?

7 Tell-Tale Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Siding

Whether your home is wrapped in brick, rock, or another material, the exteriors of your house play a significant role in maintaining its integrity. This is also true for siding. Siding cannot effectively perform when it is run down, aged, or damaged. Here are five tale-tell warning signs it’s time to replace the siding wrapped around your property:

  1. Slats that are Warping or Rippling — Siding that has been around a while or was poorly installed can cause slats to warp or ripple. Also, if you have a backyard grill near your home, look closely at the siding closest to it.
Not only is warping and rippling unsightly, but it also creates gaps in the armor of your home, which can let water in places it shouldn’t. Avoid these issues and restore curb appeal with new siding.
  2. Dents, Cracks, and ChipsExtreme weather, such as strong winds, heavy snow or rainfall, and constant sun exposure, can damage siding over time. Thankfully, a few minor dents shouldn’t cause significant issues. It isn’t too difficult to patch a few small blemishes.
But if you cannot keep up with the damage, chips, and cracks can let water seep into your property’s underlying structure, resulting in substantial problems.
  3. Discoloration — Many causes of discoloration can easily be cleaned with water and soap. This includes things like dirt and dust carried by the rain and wind.
If you notice your siding appearance becoming chalky, dull, or pale, this could be a sign that it’s just getting old and oxidized. At this point, even if you don’t mind the appearance, it’s likely to be very brittle and more susceptible to damage from other sources.
Another possible cause of discoloration is mold and mildew. These can be very difficult to remove even with disinfectant because they can get in under your siding. If the problem gets too bad, it can spread and start showing up inside your house. It may be worthwhile for you to replace your siding before the situation gets out of hand.
  1. Unanticipated Animal Companionship — If you live near a wooded or mountainous area, your house may be home to more than just you and your family. When your siding is damaged, mice, birds, wasps, and other small critters can easily find solace and safety in your property.
These animals can cause additional damage by setting up housekeeping and putting pressure on your siding, leading to warping and cracking. Keep unwanted animals out by replacing old siding.
  2. Higher Energy Bills — Did you know that your damaged siding could be the reason for your high utility bills? Siding isn’t just there for aesthetics – it protects your home from heat and cold as well as damage water can do to the understructure of your home.
Old or damaged siding is not nearly as efficient or effective as newer or undamaged materials. Once the old siding is replaced, you’re likely to see a big difference in how much you pay every month. It could also head off future costs of a cracked foundation.
  3. Bubbling, Blistering Slats — It’s common for homes built four or more decades ago to have siding slats that have begun to bubble and blister. For years, many homeowners decided against wrapping their houses in siding because of this fact.
But keep in mind that siding has come leaps and bounds regarding effectiveness. The siding used in years past (perhaps when you’re siding was put up) is not of the same quality as today’s product.
The siding used today is much more durable, resistant to the elements, and stronger than ever. With consistent care and maintenance, your siding can look new for decades to come.
  4. Peeling paint and rotting wood — If your home has wood siding, it requires repainting every few years to keep it well protected – more often if you live in an area with extreme weather. If you’ve let it go a little too long, you may notice decomposition in the wood – cracking, warping, crumbling, gaps, and possibly even mushroom growth.
When your siding gets to this point, it’s too late to fix it with a new coat of paint. To protect your home, you may want to replace your wood with vinyl siding. It’s attractive and much lower maintenance than wood siding – no need to paint it.
